Memoirs
For a printable pdf version of this guide,

“Memoirs” are accounts of the author’s personal experience that’s why they are considered nonfiction. However, there is sometimes a fine line between autobiography and fiction.
For example, a book called
Memoirs of a Geisha is actually a fascinating work of historical fiction that follows the life of a geisha through the end of her life. It depicts historical events, but it is written as fiction, despite the title. Sandra Cisneros' book,
The House on Mango Street, presents a similar situation. The story is Cisneros' personal story of her own life, but it is told through a fictional character.
A memoir is shorter than a comprehensive autobiography. The memoir tries to capture a moment or moments in one’s past, sometimes including a meaning of those events at the time of the writing of the memoir. The memoir can be more emotional rather than documental. For example, Esmeralda Santiago has written several memoirs about her life, including
When I was Puerto Rican,
Almost a Woman and
The Turkish Lover. They are full length books, but the scope of time is brief.
Recommended books to start with:
Angela's Ashes: A Memoir by Frank McCourt
920 MCC
"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either – not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir. (Amazon.com)
Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer
951 HAR
Originally published in 1953, this adventure classic recounts Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's 1943 escape from a British internment camp in India, his daring trek across the Himalayas, and his happy sojourn in Tibet, then, as now, a remote land little visited by foreigners. Warmly welcomed, he eventually became tutor to the Dalai Lama, teenaged god-king of the theocratic nation. The author's vivid descriptions of Tibetan rites and customs capture its unique traditions before the Chinese invasion in 1950, which prompted Harrer's departure. A 1996 epilogue details the genocidal havoc wrought over the past half-century. (Amazon.com)
Things I overheard while talking to myself by Alan Alda
BIO ALD
After actor Alda (Never Have Your Dog Stuffed) recovered from a nearly fatal intestinal obstruction, he decided to live as if he'd been given a second life. To make his new life as meaningful as possible, he wanted to remember those rare moments when a special stillness had come over him, the kind that hits you when you hear something that goes to the core of who you think you are. These were moments when he'd had some understanding about the meaning of his life, his reason for living—the central questions that Alda grapples with, as he looks back over his life. While poking good-natured fun at some of his earlier rhetoric (the ravings of a naïve Hollywood liberal) he shares highlights of the various commencement speeches and keynote addresses he's given to future doctors and physicists, or even to the odd group of Jefferson scholars. He phrases it differently for each audience, but the message is consistent: It's not what you do in life, but how you do it. Notice everything. Always be open to new ideas, new experiences. Alda is chatty, easygoing and humble, rather like a Mr. Rogers for grownups. His words of inspiration would be a perfect gift for a college grad or for anyone facing major life changes. (Publishers Weekly)
Almost a Woman by Esmeralda Santiago
BIO SAN
This book continues the life story that Santiago began in When I Was Puerto Rican (LJ 9/15/93). After her family's arrival in New York City, Santiago faced the difficult process of assimilation. As the oldest of eight children, she led her siblings in exploring the new culture and opportunities available to them. Santiago's memoir traces her personal growth through her teenage years; she describes her relationships with her family, her early dating experiences, and her first sexual encounters. In the end, she strikes a tenuous balance between her traditional, family-oriented culture and the new world of mainstream American society. Santiago's descriptive prose and lively dialog draw the reader in; we are reminded of the pains and pleasures of adolescence and wonder what happens next in her life. (Library Journal)
When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago
BIO SAN
Esmerelda and her seven siblings live in a corrugated metal shack in Puerto Rico. She is uprooted as a result of poverty and her parents' quarreling and suffers blows to her ego from their expectations of her. The girl goes to New York, where her grandmother lives, and must rely on her intelligence and talents to help her survive in an alien world in which being Puerto Rican is not advantageous. Her story rings true and will be an inspiration to Young Adults forced to make their own way in a sometimes hostile environment. (School Library Journal)
Louder Than Words by Jenny McCarthy
BIO MCC
The celebrity author of the best-selling Belly Laughs and Baby Laughs presents a frank account of her experiences as a mother of an autistic son, describing her efforts to manage the condition's symptoms while sorting through conflicting medical theories. Jenny McCarthy relates her struggle to discover what is behind her two-year-old son's seizures and other sudden health problems, and coming to terms with his eventual diagnosis of autism. McCarthy, who has previously written well-reviewed and humorous memoirs on both marriage and parenting, explains her new expertise in "Google Research" and her journey to get her son the best care and answers available, is culminating in practical advice regarding current behavioral and nutritional therapies for those with autism. (Reader's Advisor Online Update)
All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein
BIO KLE
Gerda recounts her comfortable childhood in Bielitz, Poland, where she attended Catholic school until the age of fifteen to obtain an academic education. When the Nazis occupied Poland, she was separated from her family and endured a harrowing existence in labor and concentration camps, culminating in a thousand-mile march, before liberation by the American army. This was one of the earliest Holocaust memoirs published in the United States. (Rosalind Reisner, Jewish American Literature)

Paranormal Romance
For a printable pdf version of this guide,
“Paranormal Romance” combines horror and romance, which is extremely popular with teens and adults.
These stories often feature imaginary creatures, such as spooky and violent vampires, cute cupids, wicked werewolves, good witches, shape-shifters, guardian angels, or evil demons.
Generally, the scenarios of these stories involve a man who is some type of creature and a woman who is human, or vice versus.
Sometimes women in the paranormal romance fall in love with men, but the women are more likely to fall in love with dangerous vampires, demons, and werewolves, temporary guardian angels, or ghosts from the past, and forbidden love is a common theme.
Magical and unexplained events occur frequently in these stories, and there is often a mystery that needs to be resolved.
Paranormal romances generally employ fast pacing, with a generous dose of violence and suspense, which frightens or titillates readers, although sometimes the stories are humorous and not scary at all.
The stories are usually set in modern times, but ghosts from the past who need help from the living can often be found in paranormal romance.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
While trying to live a so-called normal existence, mechanic Mercy Thompson, a shapeshifter raised by werewolves, gets into trouble with the gremlins, witches, and vampires with whom she deals on a daily basis.

True Crime is nonfiction narratives that describe all manner of crimes, criminals, and law enforcement techniques.
They may focus on violent crimes such as homicide, rape, kidnapping, and arson (among others), as well as a variety of crimes which are more fraudulent (cons, financial scams, theft) than violent.
Since they are often based on horrific and abhorrent crimes, they can be quite graphic and disturbing in nature, as well as quite suspenseful.
Recommended books to start with:
Green River, Running Red: The Real Story of the Green River Killer, America’s Deadliest Serial Murderer by Ann Rule
364.152 RUL
Veteran crime writer Ann Rule is uniquely qualified to chronicle the grisly career of Gary Ridgeway, the man convicted of being the "Green River Killer," the most prolific serial killer in American history.
Not only is she one of the more successful true-crime authors, but for nearly 20 years, Rule was exceptionally close to the case, reporting on it for a Seattle newspaper, preparing a long-delayed book on the subject, and living within a few blocks of the strip of highway where most of Ridgeway's victims were abducted.
The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham
345.766 GRI
In 1982 former major league baseball player Ron Williamson was convicted and sent to death row for the rape and murder of a 21-year-old waitress named Debra Sue Carter. Eventually a new trial and DNA evidence would show that Williamson (who also struggled with drug addiction and mental illness) and Dennis Fritz, another man convicted of the crime, were innocent and had been wrongfully convicted.
Thunderstruck by Erik Larson
364.152 LAR
Larson combines a true crime narrative of Dr. Hawley Crippen's 1910 murder of his wife with the history of the invention of wireless communication (and its controversial inventor Guglielmo Marconi).
Where the Money Was by Willie Sutton
364.1 SUT
Unarguably America's most famous bank robber, Willie never injured a soul, but took on almost a hundred banks and departed three of America's most escape-proof penitentiaries. This is the stuff of myth - rascally and cautionary by turns - yet true in every searing, diverting, and brilliantly recalled detail.
You Got Nothing Coming: Notes from a Prison Fish by Jimmy A. Lerner
BIO LER
Convicted of manslaughter in Las Vegas, Jimmy A. Lerner was sent to serve his time in a Nevada state prison; he tells the story of his years there in this graphic and honest memoir.
Lerner's reporting on his fellow inmates and re-creation of their dialogue makes this a quick read, and although some critics found the idea of reading a convicted felon's prison narrative distasteful, readers may find themselves drawn in by his writing skills and charisma, as well as by his narrative prowess in relating the details of the crime for which he was convicted.
